After an all-inclulsive core training focusing on safety, tools and materials, your specialization in carpentry will give you the skills to secure a position with one of the many construction firms that constantly seek quality carpenters. You can also earn a valuable credential - either a two-year Associate of Applied Science Degree or a one-year Certificate. To find out more, visit Seattle Central.
The carpentry program focuses on hands-on experience, but students also get a solid grounding in the theory behind each task or technique. You'll learn the basics of residential construction, from blueprint reading and site prep to roof vents and trim fitting. At the end of the four-quarter program you will have a good understanding of how and why structures work as well as finishing techniques that enhance visual appeal.
Carpentry instructors are professional carpenters who emphasize the application of skills learned in class to real world situations. Whenever possible students work as part of a crew on an actual building or remodeling project. This is one of the many ways SCCC
makes sure every student has the opportunity to learn the skills they need to succeed.
"The training included new construction and a remodel job - great practical experience. That's the only way to go with carpentry. 80-90% of the learning is while doing it." - David Swanberg, carpentry graduate.
