Introduction to Camtasia Studio

Part 1 | Part 2

What is Camtasia?

" Camtasia Studio is a video screen recording program that records, edits and shares videos of any action on your Windows desktop. These videos help you train, support and demonstrate."

With Camtasia you can:

  • Create software training material
  • Demonstrate web sites or software for students
  • Record lectures for online delivery.
  • Create video tutorials on almost any subject
  • Place screen videos on PowerPoint presentations
  • Develop animated demonstrations

Using Camtasia

Make sure that the resolution of your movie will work with the majority of your audience.  If you record your movie in a 1024x768 resolution and your audience is viewing it at a smaller resolution, they may loose some of the quality in trying to view it.  The majority of computer users are using 800x600 resolution. Setting your screen resolution to 640x480 is recommended.

Record only the amount of screen you need.  If you are recording an application, just record that window, a larger area will result in a larger video and download time for your audience.

The format you should use to save your videos depends largely on what your audience has access to.

It is a good idea to turn off hardware acceleration on your computer so you can increase frame capture rates on Windows 2000 and Windows XP and / or reduce CPU utilization.  Hardware acceleration can be turned off during recording under "Options > Preferences > Program in Camtasia recorder.  It can also be turned off on your system settings, but this may affect other programs.

A good frame rate or (fps) for your movie is 5-10 frames per second.  Anything higher will result in a larger video and slower download for your audience.  Make sure that when you produce your final movie in producer, that your fps matches the one you recorded under. Go to "Produce Movie > Production Options > AVI tab" and choose "Automatic" as frame rate setting
