ASSET, SLEP, Writing Sample, ENG 094 (Basic Writing Improvement I) or ESL 097 (English for
Non-Native Speaking II) with a 2.0 or higher, or instructor's permission
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The emphasis is on writing essays for academic purposes. Practice is given in the writing
process of thinking, prewriting, drafting, revising and editing. Concurrent enrollment
in ENG 081, ENG 091, or ENG 095 is recommended.

GENERAL COURSE OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the course the student will:
- Recognize and correct sentence level errors, including fragments, fused sentences, comma
splices, subject-verb agreement, pronoun agreement, parallelism, punctuation and spelling.
- Produce a five paragraph essay, with an introduction, three body paragraphs,
and a conclusion.
- Identify, develop and produce thesis statements.
- Identify, develop and produce topic sentences.
- Support main ideas with evidence and specific details in the body of the paragraphs.
- Demonstrate audience awareness through choice of tone and style.
- Generate unity in essays and their paragraphs.
- Generate coherence and cohesion in essays and their paragraphs.
- Adapt an appropriate essay pattern to develop a thesis.
- Develop a writing process, including prewriting, drafting, revising and editing.
- Interview for information.
- Produce writing for business purposes.
- Product good writing in-class, under time pressure.
- Read and mark essays and other texts.
- Generate reasonable inferences.
- Develop and use a broad writing vocabulary.
- Understand the concept of word connotations.
- Participate clearly and effectively within a diverse group.
- Report to a larger group.
