COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The emphasis is on SQ3R method, increasing reading speed and vocabulary, identifying the main idea and supporting ideas in expository reading, making inferences and evaluations, and understanding figurative language.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  1. At the end of the course, the student will successfully:
  2. Understand literal meaning;
  3. Identify topic sentences and main ideas;
  4. Infer main ideas when they are not directly stated;
  5. Recognize intermediate vocabulary (e.g. Newsweek)
  6. Apply roots and affixes to unfamiliar words;
  7. Use context clues to make meaning from text;
  8. Use an English dictionary;
  9. Identify definitions and examples in text;
  10. Identify enumerations in text;
  11. Recognize headings and subheadings;
  12. Understand signal words;
  13. Demonstrate an active reading technique, such as SQ3R or PRWR;
  14. Distinguish between fact and opinion;
  15. Interpret graphs, diagrams, illustrations, tables, and charts;
  16. Identify and analyze common organizational patterns (comparison/contrast, process, cause and effect, classification, e.g.)
  17. Use skimming and scanning skills;
