COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The emphasis is on SQ3R method, increasing reading speed and
vocabulary, identifying the main idea and supporting ideas in
expository reading, making inferences and evaluations, and
understanding figurative language.
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES ADDRESSED:
1. Communication:
- Read and listen actively to learn and communicate;
- Speak and write effectively for personal, academic, and
workplace purposes;
- Access, evaluate, and use information from a variety of
sources;
2. Human Relations:
- Use social interactive skills to work in groups
effectively;
3. Critical Thinking:
- Think critically and act logically in evaluating
information, solving problems, and making decisions;
4. Personal Responsibility:
- Value one's own skills and abilities and be motivated to
continue learning;

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
- At the end of the course, the student will successfully:
- Understand literal meaning;
- Identify topic sentences and main ideas;
- Infer main ideas when they are not directly stated;
- Recognize intermediate vocabulary (e.g. Newsweek)
- Apply roots and affixes to unfamiliar words;
- Use context clues to make meaning from text;
- Use an English dictionary;
- Identify definitions and examples in text;
- Identify enumerations in text;
- Recognize headings and subheadings;
- Understand signal words;
- Demonstrate an active reading technique, such as SQ3R or
PRWR;
- Distinguish between fact and opinion;
- Interpret graphs, diagrams, illustrations, tables, and
charts;
- Identify and analyze common organizational patterns
(comparison/contrast, process, cause and effect,
classification, e.g.)
- Use skimming and scanning skills;
- Demonstrate self-reflection and self-evaluation;
- Recognize and limit oversimplification;
- Compare analogous situations;
- Recognize cause and effect;
- Classify information;
- Compare ideals with actual practice;
- Recognize contradictions;
- Make inferences and predictions;
- Outline and take notes on a piece of text;
- Understand one's motivation;
- Establishes goals and meets deadlines;
