PREREQUISITES:
ASSET, Writing Sample, ENG 092 with a 2.0 or higher, or Instructor Permission

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The emphasis is on paragraph structure and basic sentence grammar needed for clear writing.
Practice is given in thinking, writing, editing, and proofreading. Assignments in writing clear
sentences, paragraphs, or short essays will be given. Concurrent enrollment in ENG 081,
ENG 091, or ENG 095 is required.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  1. At the end of the course, the student will successfully:
  2. Originate combined sentences;
  3. Recognize and correct sentence level errors, including fragments,
    fused sentences, comma splices, subject-verb agreement, pronoun agreement,
    punctuation, and spelling;
  4. Produce a full range of sentence patterns with minimal errors after revision;
  5. Produce specific types of phrases and clauses;
  6. Understand and use transitions and conjunctions;
  7. Identify, develop, and produce topic sentences;
  8. Support main ideas with evidence and specific details in a paragraph;
  9. Demonstrate audience awareness through choice of tone, style;
  10. Generate coherence and cohesion in paragraphs;
  11. Participate clearly and effectively within a diverse group;
  12. Report to a larger group;
  13. Explain opinions and ideas with evidence;
  14. Give specific, helpful feedback.
