COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Learn basic sentence grammar and practice the composing process of thinking, writing, re-writing, and proofreading.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES ADDRESSED:

  1. Communication:
    • Read and listen actively to learn and communicate;
    • Speak and write effectively for personal, academic, and workplace purposes;
    • Access. evaluate, and use information from a variety of sources;

COURSE OBJECTIVES: At the end of the course, the student will successfully:

  1. Identify basic parts of speech: noun, pronoun, verb, preposition, adjective, adverb;
  2. Define sentence basics: subject, predicate;
  3. Recognize subject - verb agreement;
  4. Practice sentence combining skills;
  5. Use periods, commas, question marks, and capitalization correctly in basic sentence patterns;
  6. Recognize and use basic verb tenses;
  7. Reproduce and develop standard sentence patterns;
  8. Use appropriate and focused titles;
  9. Understand writing as a process of revision;
  10. Generate ideas through clustering and freewriting;
  11. Produce original writing that is grammatically correct and free of fragments, run-togethers, and comma-splices;
  12. Produce writing under time pressure;
  13. Recognize and use basic vocabulary;
  14. Produce and use complete sentences with standard grammar and usage when speaking;
  15. Give specific, helpful feedback;
