COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Learn and apply study skills essential for successful college work: time management, effective reading comprehension, textbook marking and notetaking, test-taking skills and memory improvement.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES ADDRESSED:

  1. Communication:
    • Read and listen actively to learn and communicate;
    • Speak and write effectively for personal, academic, and workplace purposes;
    • Access, evaluate, and use information from a variety of sources;
  2. Human Relations:
    • Use social interactive skills to work in groups effectively;
  3. Critical Thinking:
    • Think critically and act logically in evaluating information, solving problems, and making decisions;
  4. Personal Responsibility:
    • Value one's own skills and abilities and be motivated to continue learning;
    • Take pride in one's ideas, work, and art;
    • Have the ability to adapt to change.
  5. Information Literacy:
    • Access and evaluate information from a variety of sources and contexts;
    • Use information to achieve personal, academic, and career goals, as well as to participate in a democratic society.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the course, the student will successfully:

  1. Understand literal meaning;
  2. Identify topic sentences and main ideas;
  3. Infer main ideas when they are not directly stated;
  4. Recognize basic vocabulary (e.g. Reader's Digest)
  5. Understand and decode vocabulary by roots and affixes;
  6. Use context clues to make meaning from text;
  7. Use an English dictionary;
  8. Identify definitions and examples in text;
  9. Identify enumerations in text;
  10. Recognize headings and subheadings;
  11. Understand signal words;
  12. Demonstrate an active reading technique, such as SQ3R or PRWR;
  13. Outline and take notes on a piece of text;
  14. Understand one's motivation;
  15. Establishes goals and meets deadlines;
  16. Take lecture notes effectively;
  17. Organize and manage time, materials, and assignments;
  18. Implement review strategies;
  19. Understand the importance of punctuality and good attendance;
  20. Utilize test-taking skills;
  21. Recognize a variety of learning styles and strategies;
  22. Access on-campus resources, such as the library, the Tutoring Center, the Writing Center, CLIC, and counseling;
  23. Participate clearly and effectively within a diverse group;
  24. Report to a larger group;
