COURSE DESCRIPTION: Study of prefixes, suffixes, roots, context clues, and essential vocabulary words; study of spelling rules and patterns. Students will study vocabulary or spelling, depending on assessment of greater need.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
- Correctly differentiate words frequently confused;
- Correctly spell common phonics patterns;
- Use mnemonic devices to learn troublesome words;
- Apply spelling rules;
- Apply rules for capitalization, apostrophes, and hyphens;
- Determine correct spelling of suffixes with unaccented vowels;
- Use pronunciation to aid spelling; or
- Use context clues of contrast, similarity, sense of
sentence, grammar and punctuation, and example to
determine meaning of vocabulary;
- Use pronunciation key to determine correct pronunciation;
- Enlarge vocabulary by learning essential words from a word list;
- Enlarge vocabulary by using words associated with 20 central themes;
- Enlarge vocabulary through various Anglo- Saxon and Latin
and Greek prefixes, suffixes, roots or word elements;
- Expand knowledge of word relationships via analogies.
Competencies will be measured by satisfactory completion of prescribed work as outlined on a Progress Chart and by satisfactory evaluation on regular mastery tests.
Students will be awarded either an "S" for work completed satisfactorily or an "NC" for unsatisfactory or insufficient work. Students can earn three, four, or five credits, depending on the amount of work completed satisfactorily.
PROCEDURES:
- Placement: Students are placed at the appropriate level
through student self-selection, assessment, writing
sample, student information sheet, and conference and
approval by the instructor; (ASSET: W=33, R=36; SLEP: 44)
- Orientation: Students are oriented to the English Lab
procedures, the text, testing procedures, and progress charts;

504 Absolutely Essential Words, or
Vocabulary Foundations for College Students
Progress Charts: Identifies units required; identifies standards for completion; located in the curriculum file;
Tests: Pretests and post-tests of the text exercises for each unit or two; tests are located in the curriculum file.
