COURSE DESCRIPTION: Students learn to revise original, written work for content, completeness, organization and style. They learn to proofread and edit for grammar, syntax, punctuation and spelling errors. Work is done using a word processing. Concurrent enrollment in a writing course is recommended. Coursework and objectives are individualized to meet the needs of each student.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  1. Apply the writing process to one's original written work.
  2. Distinguish between revising and editing.
  3. Use knowledge of grammar, punctuation, syntax, spelling, etc. to proofread and edit one's original written work.
  4. Use a standard word processing program to produce all drafts of original written work.

Competencies will be measured by the satisfactory completion of prescribed work as identified in the student's Individualized Learning Plan.

Students will be awarded an "S" for work completed satisfactorily or an "NC" for unsatisfactory or insufficient work. Students can earn three, four or five credits, depending on the amount of work completed satisfactorily.

PREREQUISITES:

  1. Placement: Students are placed in this section through self-selection, by the assessment of a writing sample, and by conferring with the instructor. (ASSET SCORES: W=33, R=36; SLEP = 44)
  2. Orientation: Students are oriented to English Lab procedures, testing materials, progress charts and assessment techniques.
  3. Concurrent enrollment in any writing course is highly recommended.
