COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Students practice and review the basic writing principles (unity, support, coherence) and
learn to write correct, mature sentences. Students also work on writing paragraphs and short
compositions in preparation for more advanced writing courses. Coursework and objectives
are individualized to meet the needs of each student.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES ADDRESSED:

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  1. Identify and compose standard sentence patterns: simple, compound, complex;
  2. Use appropriate and focussed titles for paragraphs, compositions, or essays;
  3. Understand writing as a process of revision
  4. Compose pieces that reflect unity, support and coherence;
  5. Use internal and end punctuation correctly;
  6. Demonstrates ability to combine sentences;
  7. Recognize, construct, and use basic verb tenses: simple, progressive and perfect;
  8. Proofread and edit to eliminate errors in grammar usage, punctuation and spelling.

Competencies will be measured by the satisfactory completion of prescribed work as outlined on Progress Chart or as identified in the student's Individualized Learning Plan.

Students will be awarded an "S" for work completed satisfactorily or an "NC" for unsatisfactory or insufficient work. Students can earn three, four, or five credits, depending on the amount of work completed satisfactorily.

PREREQUISITES:

  1. Placement: Students are placed in this section through self-selection, by the assessment of a writing sample, and by conferring with the instructor. (ASSET SCORES: W=33, R=36: SLEP: 44)
  2. Orientation: Students are oriented to English Lab procedures, the text, testing procedures, and progress charts.
