WELCOME to the Online Math at
South Seattle Community College

Hello and welcome to your math class. This class will be a learning experience for you and, as always, for us. As we go through this quarter, if you have problems with the structure of this class, let your instructor know. We want to make this online math course a positive educational experience for you.

We offer five developmental math courses and three transfer-level math courses in the online format. The five developmental math courses are Math 083 (arithmetic), Math 084 (Algebra I), Math 085 (Algebra II), Math 098 (Intermediate Algebra) and Math 110 (Mathematics for Technicians). The transfer math courses are Math 102 (Intermediate Algebra), Math 116 (Pre-Calculus for Business) and Math 117 (Business Calculus). Your online class will not meet on (or off) campus at all. Three of the developmental math courses are also offered on campus in lecture and lab formats. The Math 098 and the three transfer-level courses are offered on campus in lecture format. With the exception of Math 116 and 117, the online class for which you have registered will cover the same topics as the on-campus courses, but will use different materials. The Math 116 and 117 use the same text and cover the same material as the on campus classes. The syllabi and course outlines are linked from the first page of this site. The web site for the college is http://southseattle.edu.

Once you have registered, you need to email your instructor at the address listed on the first page. If you are registered for Math 116 or 117, skip to the last paragraph of this letter. Otherwise, you can pick up your packet (the disks and personal academic notebook) from the Academic Programs Center at SSCC in RSB-001. Read the What do you do now? section at the end of the syllabus for further details. (See to the syllabus options on the first page.)

Now, we suspect you are anxious to get started with the quarter. Carefully follow the directions listed in your materials packet for this foray into Academic Systems. After you have installed the client disk, you will have an icon to take you directly to the log-on screen. At the academic website you will use the entry code SSCC for South Seattle Community College. After you are registered online (by your instructor), your log-on name is your first initial and last name (no spaces). The log-on name is not case sensitive. Your password is your SSCC student ID number. If you want to use a different log-on name and/or password, just notify your instructor.

Start your course by going through the TOUR. The Tour will give you an overview of the Academic Systems presentation format and options. The specific topics (chapters and sections) for your class are listed in your Class Outline located at this website. The class outlines list what topics you should study for each test. The class outline also lists an average of the time involved online for each topic. Use this information to plan your study time and study schedule for this quarter. The hardest part of independently studying a given amount of material (the math topics) in a specific time frame (one quarter) is to know how fast you need to go, how much to study each day. It is all right to go faster than required by the class, but if you go slower, you may not complete all the material or the class successfully. Accordingly, plan your study days and times NOW, on paper, and stick to this plan!

Again, welcome to your Online Math class from South Seattle Community College! We are pleased you could join us. If you need to contact us, call the SSCC Academic Center at 206-768-6600 or contact your instructor as indicated in his/her initial email contact. (You should have already sent an email to your instructor at the address noted on the first page.)
