Back to First Page Is On-Line Math for You? |
|
An on-line math course is NOT easier than a lecture or lab math course.
Are you sure you are ready for this type of learning? NOTE: If you are a self-motivated, self-disciplined student who is able to work independently, then you will do very well in any mode of learning – on-line, lecture or lab. However, if (like many of us) you need the encouragement of, and interaction with, other students, then you probably won't do well in an online math course. In a lecture class, you have the opportunity to interact with your instructor and your fellow students. You receive immediate feedback to your questions. You are able to hear responses as well as observe body language. You can see those smiles and hear those laughs! The instructor provides the pace and the whole class moves through the material together. You must provide the time and energy to spend attending class, reading the book and practicing the mathematics. In an on-line class, you do not usually choose to interact with your instructor in person. You may choose to meet with your instructor only if you live in the area of the college and your schedule allows you to do so. Usually, interaction with your instructor is limited to the email or the phone when needing help. The way our classes are presently set up, you have no interaction with your fellow math students. The instructor provides a schedule of topics for you to follow. You set your own pace and move through the material alone. You must provide the time and energy to spend online listening/reading the text and practicing the mathematics. Please seriously consider whether this mode of learning is for you and to your educational advantage! |
