The Books

Mediated Learning Instruction (your "auditory" textbook) & the Personal Academic Notebooks, (practice problems with minimal explanations) by Academic Systems. All of these are available to you at the Academic Programs Center or through the mail. Bring in proof of paid registration from the cashier and we will give you the materials at no additional cost. (They are covered under the course fee.)

The Courses

Math 083: This course covers the topics of arithmetic operations with whole numbers, fractions and decimals, ratios and proportions, exponents, American and metric linear measures, perimeter, area and volume.
Math 084: This course covers operations with signed numbers, solutions of first-degree equations and polynomials.
Math 085: This course covers factoring, systems of equations, graphs, fractional expressions and equations, radical expressions and equations, and quadratic equations.
Math 098: This course covers sets and the real number system, polynomial and rational expressions, exponents and radicals, applications, systems of linear equations and graphs.

Class Format

Your course is a highly interactive course in which you will spend your time in front of a computer with a pencil and paper. You are to listen and read (or just read or just listen to) explanations, to try examples, and to take practice quizzes on the computer at a pace, which is comfortable and successful for you. The average student should plan on spending about 60 hours total on the computer by the end of the course. In addition, you will spend time working in the Personal Academic Notebooks (PAN) doing homework problems.

Material Covered

Each course covers specific topics in the Academic Systems material. The Course Schedule indicate the topics to be covered and the online time commitment. Feel free to work ahead of the schedule whenever the topics are easier for you to understand. Spend more time with the topics most difficult for you. However, do NOT fall behind the suggested schedule by very much or you may have difficulty completing the course material before the end of the quarter.

Calculators

We recommend you use your own calculator. It is important to be comfortable with your own calculator. You are allowed to use the calculator on your graded tests. However, if you do not own a calculator, there is a calculator included in the Mediated Learning software. This calculator is always easily accessible for your use online. Contact your instructor about his/her preferences and recommendations for the calculator for your class.

Note that there is free private tutoring available in the Special Students Services Center (RS 18) and in the Student Success Service (RS 66 Click). The MAST tutoring center in RS18 (206 763-5137) is available for the math tutoring. Attendance

Your instructor will know how often you access the Mediated Learning. Also available to your instructor is your progress and time spent online on your math. You are graded on your ability to do well on the graded tests covering the concepts you study and “Evaluate” quizzes on the computer.

Homework

After you finished each section specific homework assignments in the Personal Academic Notebooks will be assigned by the computer. In addition, you are expected to do all the odd-numbered problems in each required section. Answers to the odd-numbered homework problems are at the end of the book.
Do all the problems if you feel you need more practice. Learning mathematics is like learning to play the piano or baseball; it takes lots of practice! So, PRACTICE!

Quizzes

You will be taking the online quizzes “Evaluates” when you have completed each topic or section. These are excellent evaluation tools for you. These are found under “Evaluate” on the computer. You may retake each quiz three times (the problems are different) or until you have mastered the material from that topic.. Before retaking a quiz, be sure to review the Explanations. These  quizzes will directly affect your grade if your instructor counts “Evaluate” on-line quizzes as a part of the grade for the class.

Tests

There will be 5 tests and 1comprehensive final exam. All tests are done individually. Make-up tests are not given. The tests are not done online. Your instructor will contact you regarding the procedure for taking the tests.
The method that has been mostly used is that students take tests at testing sites approved by instructors.
 Another method for students who live far away from Seattle is as follows: Each test will be sent along with a Proctor Sheet and Student Directions. You may find appropriate proctor at the testing center at your local community college or any other educational institution or your local librarian. (Not appropriate are family members, friends, or your co-workers or supervisor.)
You are to do the test in one sitting, of one hour or less, with no assistance from others. (The final exam is to be taken in one sitting of two hours or less.) Each problem will be graded based upon the work you provide. That is, partial credit will be given. A scientific or graphing calculator are allowed. Do not use any scratch paper; show all your scratch work on the test itself.
Proctor will send the test back to your instructor in the standard size 4”x9” envelope using US mail using instructions form your instructor to the proctor.
Again, your instructor will contact you regarding the procedure for the tests.

Grades

Your class grade will be based upon the graded materials. The grading specifics and the grading scale is available from your instructor. You may check with him/her for grading specifics. The grading scale is given below:

• 95% - 100%     4.0
• 90% - 94.9%    3.7
• 85% - 89.9%    3.3
• 80% - 84.9%    2.9
• 75% - 79.9%    2.4
• 70% - 74.9%    2.0
• 65% - 69.9%    1.7
• 60% - 64.9%    1.4
• Below 60%       0.0

The option to take a grade of a NC (No Credit - which does not affect your grade point average) is open to you only if both of the following conditions are met.

1. you have been working on the materials regularly.
2. you email/send a written request to your instructor or asked your instructor in person before the last week of the quarter.

2. Email the instructor teaching your class. The name and email address is listed on the bottom of the main page.
3. Pick up your packet (the disks and PAN) from the Academic programs Center at SSCC in UNI 101. (See campus map.) Call for hours (206-768-6600) or call if you need the course packet mailed to you. (It takes at least a week to receive the packet if we have to mail it to you.)
4. Remember: Your Log-on Name is your first initial and your last name, no spaces. Your password is the last six digits of your student ID number.
5. Do the TOUR that will give you an overview of the presentation format and options.
6. Now, for each of the topics and sections, follow this process: Repeat any topic or page, if it necessary for your understanding.
1. Work through the EXPLAIN and APPLY portions of the topic/section.
2. Do the EVALUATE portion. If you do poorly, redo step (a) and then try the Evaluate again.
3. When you finish a topic or log-off, check the HOMEWORK section for the homework problems you need to practice in your PAN (personal academic notebook).
4. Although not required, you may choose to do the EXPLORE sections. These are just for the fun of the math and are really interesting.
5. If you have completed all the topics for the graded test, then make an appointment with your proctor to take the test. (Check your class outline for what topics are covered on each test.)
