Welcome to Math 116

The Course
Math 116 Mathematical Applications For the Management, Life, and Social Sciences is a 5-credit, college-level mathematics course that requires a pre-requisite of Math 098 Intermediate Algebra with a grade of 2.0 or better, or appropriate COMPASS placement score. Math 116 will satisfy both the math and the quantitative reasoning requirements for an Associate of Arts degree. This course transfers to four-year colleges or universities as math credits.
This course begins with a comprehensive review of algebra. You will need a solid algebra base to successfully handle the topics covered in Pre-Calculus and Calculus for Business. In this course you will study mathematical models, graphs and algebraic, exponential and logarithmic functions. You will also study  finite mathematics with an emphasis on financial math, and systems of linear equations and inequalities using both matrices and linear programming techniques.

Class Format
The method of learning in this course is mostly reading the textbook with guidance from your instructor. You, the student, spend time reading the text, studying the examples, and practicing the material by doing homework problems. This will require you to schedule periods of uninterrupted time for your math class. It is expected that you spend 8 to 10 hr per week to study for this course. Your commitment to your math class will determine your success.
