Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is Running Start?

A: Running Start is a program which allows academically qualified juniors and seniors in public high schools the opportunity to take college courses at a Washington state community college while still in high school.

Q: Who is eligible for Running Start?

A: Any public high school junior or senior under 21 years of age who is registered in a public high school and qualifies for college level course work based on placement test results.

Q: If I attend private school, can I still take part in Running Start?

A: To take part in Running Start, you must be registered in a public high school. You do not have to take courses at the public school.

Q: What is the first step if I want to be a Running Start student at SSCC?

A: The first step is to take either the ESL/COMPASS (non-native speakers) or COMPASS English placement test. (Learn more about each of these tests.)

There is no fee for Running Start students to take the test, provided you bring your high school ID and get a voucher from our cashier to take to the testing office.

Q: After I take my placement test, then what do I do?

A: Your test results need to be interpreted. Schedule an appointment with the Running Start Director, to determine your eligibility to partake in Running Start. Please phone 764-5387 to schedule an appointment.

Q: Do I need to place into college level English AND Math to be in Running Start?

A:You are eligible to be in Running Start if you place in one subject, but not the other. You are entitled to register only for courses in which you qualify.

Q: What if my test results are not high enough to be eligible in Running Start?

A: Depending on your scores, you can retest after three months, or sooner with permission from the Running Start Director. (Re-tests are not free. Please see fee schedule.)

Q: Do I pay tuition?

A: Tuition and lab fees associated with courses at the 100 level or higher are paid through state taxes. Courses below the 100 level are paid by the student.

Q: What are the costs and fees that I am responsible for?

A: You are responsible for:
  •  Student ID-$5
  •  Transportation (bus pass or parking permit)
  •  Tuition for any class below college-level (any course numbered below 100). Students must also have approval from the high school counselor to take these courses.
  •  Books

Q: What if I can't afford to purchase text books at SSCC?

A: If you qualify for free or reduced lunch at your high school, you may be eligible to participate in the Book Loan Program (BLP). You can contact the Running Start Program Assistant for more information concerning the BLP.

Q: Will the grades and credits I earn through Running Start go on my high school or my college transcripts?

A: Running Start classes count towards your high school graduation requirements and are included on your permanent college transcript.

Q: Is there a minimum GPA I must maintain at SSCC to continue in the Running Start program?

A:You must maintain a GPA of at least 2.0, or you will be put on academic probation.

Q: Can I still take part in my high school's activities, sports, and classes?

A: You are still a student of your high school, even if all your classes are here at SSCC. You should talk to your high school counselor regarding eligibility for sports, etc.

Q: After I am in the Running Start program at SSCC, will I need to complete another Pre-enrollment form?

A: A pre-enrollment form is required each quarter that you attend SSCC as a Running Start student. This will allow your high school counselor and college advisor to know that you are on track with your high school graduation requirements.
